These green walls of forest in Monteverde, Costa Rica contain some of the most biodiverse ecosystems on the planet — and also some of the most fragile. Walking up the dirt road toward a trail that climbs along the continental divide, I stopped to take this photo on a sunny morning in June of 2018, in the midst of our long journey to rediscover the iconic Golden Toad. I spent my formative years in Monteverde, learning about climate change in the cloud forest and watching members of the community apply their talents to the preservation of these globally important — and rapidly changing — habitats and ecosystems. In a few weeks, I would trade these walls of forest for the concrete walls of San Jose as I prepared to return to the US; the Golden Toad would remain, for the time being, undiscovered.
