In Monteverde, Costa Rica, there seem to be innumerable reserves, refuges, and hiking trails, all with their own unique glimpse into another world; but this place, out of the multitudes, is one of the best. This is a semi-secret spot just below the continental divide, on the machete ridge of the Tilaran mountain range that carves out Monteverde's cloud forests. It is private property, but the landowner often allows small student groups to climb up into its boundaries to experience the forest as it was one hundred years ago- primary forest that has never heard the rumble of a chainsaw. These are the lungs of the earth, a good place to breathe deep and disappear into the mossy portals to another world.
