When I was growing up, I had a poster on my wall of old elephants moving through cool blue mist with a jungle at their backs. The imagery captivated me, and I would go to bed dreaming of someday journeying to that sort of place myself, of standing at the edge of the world and looking out onto the unknown. When I took this photo from the forest’s edge in Monteverde, Costa Rica a few days after my 25th birthday, I felt like I was fulfilling a promise that I’d made a long time ago. Blue mist rising over protected forest in the evening of a summer day, three thousand miles from the place that I had once called home. There will be more evenings like this one to come.
